Sarr scores again in win for high-flying Palace
Ismaila Sarr proved to be Crystal Palace's hero once again as his late goal earned Oliver Glasner's side a narrow 1-0 victory over Ipswich Town at Selhurst Park.
The Eagles have now won nine of their past 11 games in all competitions, but were made to work for this win against a resolute Ipswich backline.
Eddie Nketiah wasted a glorious chance to hand the hosts the lead in the first half, with Sarr and Daniel Munoz also spurning some good opportunities after the interval.
A fine Jacob Greaves block then denied Eberechi Eze from close range as the hosts continued to probe, and Ipswich went close minutes later with Julio Enciso's effort.
Eze's cross deflected off Dara O'Shea on to the post as Palace searched for the breakthrough early in the second half, but Ipswich still looked a threat on the break.
Liam Delap forced a save from Dean Henderson before Jaden Philogene had a shot cleared off the line by eventual match-winner Sarr.
The deciding moment came in the 82nd minute when Sarr raced into the area before lifting a delicate finish over Alex Palmer to seal the victory.
The win sees Palace move up to 11th place on the Premier League table, while Ipswich remains in 18th and five points adrift of safety.
Palace is enjoying a wonderful start to 2025 and this latest win means it has now picked up 19 points since the turn of the year, with only league leader Liverpool managing more (25).
Indeed, Glasner recorded his 17th win in his 41st Premier League game with Palace – only Roy Hodgson (59 in 182) and Alan Pardew (25 in 73) have won more in charge of the Eagles in the competition.
Furthermore, Sarr's late winner ensured that Palace has now scored in its past 10 matches in the Premier League, its longest run of games with a goal since a run of 11 matches from January to March 2019.
Palace boss Glasner believes a third straight win is a statement for his side ahead of a three-week spell without a game before their FA Cup quarter-final against Fulham.
"It was an amazing goal from Ismaila Sarr and we took the win,” the Austrian said.
“We are really proud because it's a third win in a row in the Premier League. It's a tough thing for any team to do and these guys did it. It's a great statement.
“We now have three weeks without a game and it is important for us to use this time in the best way to make sure we are ready for the crunch time.”
The Eagles were able to win despite the absence of Jean-Philippe Mateta, who sustained a serious head injury last weekend against Millwall, but Glasner emphasised the importance of the team, not individuals, in finding results.
He said: “I don't think Mateta ever won a game alone. He has always needed his team-mates.
“That was the same today. He gets the credit for scoring the goals but all the others help as well.
"They work hard, create chances and he finishes. Keeping a clean sheet is also important. It is always a team effort.”
Ipswich boss Kieran McKenna, meanwhile, praised his side for a battling performance despite its relegation fears being deepened by the result.
“It was a really hard-fought game," he said.
“The margins are really fine and the level of the division is really high. We were really close to taking the points today but it's frustrating for the club that we haven't.
“We came here with a depleted squad and competed really, really well. We can still improve and I think we are improving.”
McKenna recognises the importance of taking some positives into next weekend’s vital match at home to Nottingham Forest, adding: “The only thing that will make us feel better is getting some points from Nottingham Forest.
"The group knows we are getting closer to winning points. We know that one result will change the feel of things.”
