Isak knows he still has work to do after first Premier League goal for Liverpool
There was a sense of relief for Alexander Isak, who finally scored his first Premier League goal for Liverpool against West Ham.
Alexander Isak acknowledged he still has work to do to find his top form after scoring his first Premier League goal for Liverpool in Sunday's 2-0 win over West Ham.
The Sweden striker produced a fine side-footed effort on the hour at London Stadium, with Cody Gakpo adding a late second after Lucas Paqueta was sent off for the hosts.
Isak's goal came on his sixth Premier League appearance for the Reds from his 10th shot, and he now has six career goals against West Ham – his joint-most against any opponent.
Speaking to Sky Sports after the game, Isak said: "I'm aware that it has been a long time coming, and I have been trying to get back to my best form.
"I'm still on the way, but I am happy to get that goal. The best feeling today is that we win the game and that is the best way to get a good spirit in the group. But, of course, I am a striker, so scoring goals will always help me.
"We have to use this win in a good way, but also be humble. We have to stay focused and keep working hard to keep this momentum."
Liverpool had lost three straight games in all competitions prior to this contest, conceding 10 goals in the process, while it was nine losses from 12 when looking further back.
Victory lifts them to eighth in the table and Isak praised the fight the Reds showed.
"We knew it was going to be difficult to get back to winning ways after our recent form," he added. "I'm happy that we won and happy to be on the scoresheet as well.
"When you are going through tough times as a team, it is about fighting. The boys did really well."
Isak was substituted not long after his goal, and Red boss Arne Slot conceded the goal feels significant for his striker, who arrived for a British-record fee from Newcastle United in the last transfer window.
"I think it does [feel significant]. I wasn't planning to give him many more minutes [before bringing him off]," Slot said.
"There's definitely a feeling of relief [on returning to winning ways], because if you have lost so many times, then winning is important.
"We hardly conceded a chance. We were able to create chances ourselves. In other games, we gave away a lot more than we did today.
"It helps if you don't go 1-0 down after five minutes, because then you are more open. We played the game I wanted us to play.
"What I saw meant a lot to our players and our fans. The fans had to travel a long way to support a team that has been performing poorly.
"On Wednesday, we face Sunderland. It's a very busy schedule for everyone. This is a good first step for us – that we won and had a clean sheet."
