Muscat in two-man tussle for Rangers top job
Former Australia international Kevin Muscat could be named the new Rangers manager in the next 24 hours, with the Scottish Premiership giant reportedly set to name its new boss imminently.
Muscat, who won a domestic treble as a player at Ibrox in 2003, is one of two final candidates for the position and finds himself up against ex-Club Brugge, Genk and Monaco boss Philippe Clement.
Like Muscat, who won a domestic treble with Rangers in 2003, the Belgian also has an impressive resume, winning three consecutive Belgian Pro League titles prior to a short spell at Monaco.
While his current status as a free agent might make him an easier hire, there is little doubt Muscat would jump at the chance to manage the club he played for, despite recent title success in the J-League with his current club Yokohama F. Marinos.
Muscat also has title-winning credentials from Australia in the A-League with Melbourne Victory.
Either Muscat or Clement will be the fourth manager in two years at Rangers as it struggles to wrestle the dominance it once had in Scotland from bitter Glasgow rival Celtic, formerly managed by another Australian in Ange Postecoglou.
Postecoglou's recent move to Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur was undoubtedly earned as a result of his success at the Hoops.
Michael Beale was dumped by Rangers a fortnight ago after losing three matches in seven this season, culminating in a 3-1 defeat to Aberdeen at Ibrox.
Steven Davis was placed in interim charge and led a fightback of sorts as Rangers beat St Mirren 3-0 ahead of the international break.
Whether it's Muscat or Clement, the new manager will reportedly meet his new squad at the Rangers Training Centre on Monday before readying it for Rangers' next challenge, which is hosting Hibernian next weekend.
