Juventus climbs into top four as Milan slumps
Juventus moved up to fourth place in Serie A after a 2-0 victory over AC Milan at Allianz Stadium, both goals coming in the second half.
Second-half goals from Samuel Mbangula and Timothy Weah got the Bianconeri back to winning ways after a run of four matches across all competitions without a victory.
Thiago Motta's side went closest to scoring during the first period. Federico Gatti headed a glorious opportunity wide from close range, while Mike Maignan thwarted Kenan Yildiz.
Maignan also came to Milan's rescue in the 54th minute with a superb double-save to deny Weah and Teun Koopmeiners.
However, the Rossoneri goalkeeper was helpless as Juve broke through just before the hour mark, when he could only help Mbangula's curling effort in off the crossbar.
Substitute Weah then secured the victory in the 64th minute, racing away from Fikayo Tomori before beating Maignan at his far post to condemn Milan to its first defeat under Sergio Conceicao.
Juventus has now kept four consecutive clean sheets against Milan in Serie A for the first time in the club's history, while beating it at home for the first time since November 2019.
As for Milan, it failed to score for only the second time in its past 30 Serie A away games, with both instances coming against Juventus.
Conceicao conceded that he was concerned about his side's mentality, acknowledging he must make changes moving forward.
"I am the coach and I have to change things. I am responsible for this defeat and I will work to find a solution to avoid such moments in the future. It's a possible mission," Conceicao said.
"The first step to winning the game is to want to win it... I am the guilty party and I take responsibility, but everyone has to examine their conscience.
"I'm thinking about what I can do to change the atmosphere in the dressing room and around the team.
"We have to do more because we have the league, the [UEFA] Champions League and the Coppa Italia.
"We must improve, reflect on our current situation and consider changes in the dressing room environment."
Thiago Motta applauded Juventus's consistency after inflicting Conceicao's first defeat as Milan coach.
"Today we played a great game, games like this are won with a lot of daily work from these guys, whom I thank," Motta said.
"They are improving because they work with a lot of commitment, overcoming the many difficulties we have had. Victories like these are the right reward."
Motta's side remains unbeaten in the league so far, but had drawn seven of its previous eight league games, including in each of its past three Serie A clashes.
"In the last match with Atalanta we made some technical errors that gave confidence to the opponent," Motta said.
"Today the opposing team understands that they are facing a team with a good defensive phase, and they play good football by putting intensity and quality to be superior."
