Napoli dealt Buongiorno injury blow
With only four games left in the Serie A title race, Napoli have been dealt a defensive injury blow, with Alessandro Buongiorno out.
Napoli defender Alessandro Buongiorno is reportedly set to miss the rest of the season due to an adductor injury.
The Italian started their 2-0 home win against Torino on Sunday, but was forced off in the 64th minute through injury, just over six minutes after Frank Anguissa had also had to go off the pitch.
Italian media reported that the injury puts an end to Buongiorno's season, which will leave Antonio Conte unable to call on him for the last four games of the title race.
"Alessandro Buongiorno underwent instrumental tests today at the Pineta Grande Hospital, which revealed a destructive lesion of the long adductor muscle of the right thigh," Napoli said in a statement.
The club added that the 25-year-old has already begun his rehabilitation process.
Buongiorno has started all 22 of the Serie A games he has played in, contributing to 14 wins and 10 clean sheets.
He has made a team-high 35 interceptions, with Anguissa second with 31, while only Amir Rrahmani (158) has made more clearances than Buongiorno (73) in the league.
Napoli reclaimed the sole lead in the Serie A standings with that victory over Torino, sitting top on 74 points, three ahead of second-placed Inter.
The Partenopei travel to relegation-threatened Lecce on Saturday before facing Genoa, Parma and Cagliari in their final matches.
