Rangers in limbo after Gerrard snubs return offer
Steven Gerrard will not be returning to Rangers after it was revealed talks to bring him back to the Scottish Premiership giant fell apart over the weekend.
Gerrard won the Scottish top flight title with Rangers in 2021 before leaving for Aston Villa, and the Glasgow club appeared to have gone all-in on the 45-year-old after a disastrous spell under Russell Martin, who was sacked last week in the wake of a 1-1 draw with Falkirk.
Gerrard's time at Villa didn't reach the expectations many had of him, and he was sacked after less than a year in charge of the Premier League club before moving to the Middle East to take up a role with Saudi Pro League club Al Ettifaq, which he left in January after a year and a half in that post.
Gerrard is believed to have met with Rangers' American owners over a numebr of days, only to turn down the chance of a hero's return because the "timing wasn't right", sources have revealed.
Talks between Gerrard and Rangers were understood to have been positive throughout, and the door appears to be open for a future return for the former Liverpool and England captain.
Gerrard is reported to have expressed his gratitude for the continued support of the Rangers fans and wished the club every success for the season ahead.
Rangers is currently eight on the Scottish Premiership table after recording just one win from its seven games so far, along with five draws and one defeat for a tally of just eight points.
Its solitary win came against Livingston on 29 September (AEST), but the poor run around that result has left the club 11 points adrift if current league leader Hearts and nine points behind fierce rival Celtic, which is second on the table.
