Brugge and Juve stay safe after bore draw
Juventus was held to a goalless draw away to Club Brugge in a dour contest that provided little in the way of entertainment in the UEFA Champions League.
The result left Juventus in 14th on 12 points – one behind eighth-placed Aston Villa – with one game remaining for both sides.
Club Brugge, meanwhile, is one point back from its visitor in 17th place with a four-point cushion to 25th, which is the spot outside the play-off places in the new 36-team first phase.
This was the first UEFA Champions League game to have had just one shot on target since Lille v Bayern Munich in October 2012.
Club Brugge's best chance came in the second half when forward Ferran Jutgla slipped the ball through Pierre Kalulu's legs and drove his shot just wide of the post.
That was as good as it got for the hosts, while Juventus tested home goalkeeper Simon Mignolet from distance late on through Manuel Locatelli, but he was equal to it.
Juventus's league stage rounds off with a home game against Benfica next week, while Club Brugge travels to Manchester City.
With plenty of players now returning from injury for Juventus, coach Thiago Motta believes that now is the time for the forwards within the team to step up their performance level.
"Finally, we are starting to get some players back from injury, above all in attack," he said.
"We started with Samuel Mbangula, Nico Gonzalez and Timothy Weah, then Kenan Yildiz, Dusan Vlahovic and Francisco Conceicao came on.
"These are all players who can give us something more. Our forwards are the ones who at the moment have to contribute more to the team."
Motta was not purely negative in his post-match comments and did reserve some praise for Locatelli and Douglas Luiz, whom he believes excelled in defensive and midfield roles in Belgium.
"It is a way of staying balanced, Manu understands the right moment to drop deep or push forward," he said.
"Douglas Luiz is a player with superior technical quality, in good shape physically right now and did very well in recent matches."
