Hummels apologises for Roma's Europa League exit
Mats Hummels held himself accountable for costing Roma its dream of winning the UEFA Europa League after his dismissal in a Round of 16 defeat against Athletic Club.
The former Borussia Dortmund centre-back was shown a straight red card for a professional foul on Maroan Sannadi just 11 minutes in at San Mames.
Nico Williams subsequently scored twice, with another goal coming from Yuri Berchiche, as Leandro Paredes' stoppage-time penalty proved a mere consolation in a 3-1 defeat that dumped Roma out 4-3 on aggregate.
Hummels did not hold back his emotions when taking to social media, apologising to Roma supporters for his dismissal that turned the tie on its head.
"I am sorry Roma, I want to apologise to our fans and my team-mates," the veteran defender posted.
"I let everyone down today with a mistake that was simply stupid and horrendous.
"These games used to be the games my team could rely on me, now i fu**** up and cost the whole club the dream of winning the Europa League.
"Don‘t know what else to say, I am as disappointed in me like all of you."
