UAE vs Iraq: First leg ends in 1-1 draw
The UAE fought back to secure a 1-1 draw in the first leg of the fifth-round AFC World Cup playoff at Mohammed Bin Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi on Thursday.
Brazil-born midfielder Luanzinho equalised in the 18th minute, keeping the UAE’s hopes alive after Ali Al Hamadi put Iraq ahead in the 10th minute.
The second leg of the playoff will take place in Basra, Iraq, on November 18, with the winner progressing to the intercontinental qualifying tournament set for March in Mexico.
The top two teams from that event in Mexico will claim the final two spots at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The UAE are aiming to end a 35-year wait for a World Cup return, having last appeared at Italia ’90.
