'It's about trusting the process' - Frank hails Mbeumo after penalty retake against Palace
Bryan Mbeumo maintained his perfect Premier League penalty record, but only after a retake was required against Crystal Palace.
Thomas Frank saluted Bryan Mbeumo for "trusting his process" after the forward's retaken penalty helped Brentford to victory over Crystal Palace.
The Bees made it back-to-back Premier League away wins after prevailing 2-1 at Selhurst Park, where Kevin Schade was also on target.
The contest swung in Brentford's favour on the hour mark when the referee pointed to the spot after Maxence Lacroix tripped Nathan Collins in the box.
Mbeumo struck the post with his initial penalty but, after Marc Guehi was penalised for encroachment following a VAR review, the forward made no mistake with his retaken spot-kick as he sent Dean Henderson the wrong way.
The forward has now been successful with all nine Premier League spot-kicks he has taken for Brentford, while becoming only the fifth player in the division to take nine or more and score all of them.
And Frank was pleased with the way Mbeumo held himself together after missing his first attempt.
"I would want him to take it again," he said. "He's our best penalty taker. It's all about trusting the process, and he did."
"[It was a] tough game against a very good Palace team," the Brentford boss added.
"I knew it would be very difficult. We defended very well and gave basically nothing away. We handled their front three very well. [A] very solid performance."
Mbeumo agreed with the importance of owning the process and putting his hard work behind the scenes into practice.
"I work on them a lot and I had the chance to take a second one," he said. "I just focused on myself. It's all about mentality at this point. I know I work a lot, and I just needed to do the business.
"I think [three points] are massive, we know it is really hard to play. They defended really well, really compact. The calmness and the attitude we showed today helped."
Meanwhile, Palace suffered their first defeat in seven matches across all competitions, despite Romain Esse giving them hope by scoring on his Premier League debut in the 85th minute.
However, Oliver Glasner was left to rue his side's unsuccessful late push for a second goal to snatch a share of the spoils.
"Both teams neutralised each other for a lot of the time," he said. "It looked like the team who made the first mistake would lose. We couldn't clear the ball and caused a penalty.
"It didn't feel like we were close to the equaliser. We knew it would be a long [period of stoppage time], and I think we started too early with the long balls.
"We had to prepare for the situation. We went too straight, and it's not too difficult to defend.
"The performance was okay; not brilliant, but not too bad. We have to work."
