Man City confirm £50m capture of Porto midfielder Gonzalez
Manchester City have found their replacement for Rodri, welcoming Nico Gonzalez from Porto to take their January spending to £180million.
Nico Gonzalez has become Manchester City's fourth signing of the January transfer window after completing a reported £50million move from Porto on Monday.
Gonzalez follows Omar Marmoush, Abdukodir Khusanov and Vitor Reis through the doors at the Etihad Stadium as the champions look to save their season.
The 23-year-old, who has signed a four-and-a-half-year deal, operates as a defensive midfielder and has been a key area Pep Guardiola identified to bolster after losing Ballon d'Or winner Rodri for the rest of the campaign.
Gonzalez was a product of the Barcelona academy, making 37 first-team appearances for the Blaugrana before completing a switch to Porto ahead of the 2023-24 season.
He has gone on to feature 68 times across all competitions for Porto and has impressed for the Dragoes as they sit third in the Primeira Liga, eight points behind leaders Sporting CP.
In the top-flight this term, no player has won more tackles for Porto than Gonzalez (19), while only Nehuen Perez (926) and Otavio (919) have completed more passes than the Spaniard (819).
Gonzalez was left out of Porto's squad for their 2-2 draw with Rio Ave on Monday and completed a medical in Portugal before finalising a move to the Premier League.
"This is the perfect opportunity for me at this stage of my career," Gonzalez said.
"I am 23, and I want to test myself in England. There's no better club than Manchester City for me to do that.
"Look at the squad they have here. It's unbelievable, full of world-class players. There isn't a footballer in the world who would not want to be part of this set-up.
"I know the reputation Pep has, and I cannot wait to work with him. In fact, I am honoured he wants me to play in his team.
"I am truly excited. I just want to meet my team-mates, and the staff here, and then I want to play in front of the City fans!"
Gonzalez's first appearance for the club could come in this weekend's FA Cup fourth-round clash against Leyton Orient.
