All Whites call on teenager to face Australia
New Zealand head coach Darren Bazeley has given 17 year-old Wellington Phoenix attacker Luke Brooke-Smith his first international call-up for the squad to face Australia in the "Soccer Ashes" series.
Brooke-Smith, who became the youngest New Zealander to play in the A-League when he made his Phoenix debut last December at 16, replaces Liberato Cacace in the squad.
Defender Cacace is continuing his return to full fitness after being injured during his first match for English Championship side Wrexham at Southampton last month.
Brooke-Smith is joined in the squad by 20 year-old Ipswich Town goalkeeper Henry Gray. He replaces Alex Paulsen, who remains in Poland to settle in at Lechia Gdańsk following a late loan move from AFC Bournemouth.
Bazeley described the selections as an investment in the All Whites' future.
"Henry and Luke are players we very much see as future All Whites," he said. "Both have earned this opportunity with strong performances at club level, and while young, they’ve got something to offer at this level."
The All Whites meet fellow 2026 World Cup qualifiers Australia over two legs for the Soccer Ashes trophy inspired by the long-standing cricket series between Australia and England.
It starts in Canberra, with the second match in Auckland on 9 September.
