Guirassy ends drought as Dortmund goes second
Serhou Guirassy ended his four-game Bundesliga goal drought as Borussia Dortmund moved up to sit second on the Bundesliga table with a hard-earned 1-0 win at Augsburg.
Guirassy took advantage of a fortunate ricochet involving Chrislain Matsima and Han-Noah Massengo late in the first half as Dortmund moved within four points of league leader Bayern Munich, which will look to continue its perfect start to 2025-2026 at home to Bayer Leverkusen on Sunday (AEDT).
Coming into the game, Guirassy was enduring his longest Bundesliga goal drought since returning to the competition when he joined Stuttgart in 2022.
But after a clinical finish past Finn Dahmen, he has five Bundesliga goals this term, with only Harry Kane (12) and Jonathan Bukardt (six) outscoring him in the competition.
Augsburg forward Mert Komur miscued when presented with the first real opening after a quiet start to the game, before Guirassy struck in the 37th minute.
Waldemar Anton fired a pass towards his striker, and although Matsima was well-placed to incept, he headed against Massengo's chest and the loose ball dropped to Guirassy, who slotted home.
Carney Chukwuemeka fired over early in the second half, while Jobe Bellingham's sliding challenge denied Elvis Rexhbecaj a clean shot at goal at the other end.
But chances remained few and far between until full-time, with both teams managing just one shot on target apiece, as Niko Kovac's side clung on for back-to-back wins.
