Hjulmand still hoping for Leverkusen UCL spot
With one Bundesliga game left to play, Bayer Leverkusen could still clinch a UEFA Champions League spot, and head coach Kasper Hjulmand is determined to make it happen.
Leverkusen is sixth heading into its final-day match against Hamburger SV, knowing that anything short of a win would not be enough to give it a chance.
It is three points behind fourth-placed Stuttgart, with Hoffenheim level with it on 61 points.
Stuttgart and Hoffenheim would both need to lose to Eintracht Frankfurt and Borussia Monchengladbach respectively to help Leverkusen should it win, but Hjulmand remains up for the challenge.
"It's not over yet," he insisted.
"Our task is clear: we have to win the match. That's what we've discussed and prepared for all week.
"I'm 100 per cent focused on that. Anything can happen on the final day. It's important that we show the right mentality and energy, in our stadium and in front of our fans."
Leverkusen is at least assured of a UEFA Europa League spot, no matter the result against HSV, which ssit 11th on the table.
The promoted side has ensured its Bundesliga status for another season and as such is playing only for pride on Saturday, although it could finish 10th with a win.
But if Leverkusen fails to win, it would be a slight damper on a rollercoaster season, which began under Erik ten Hag鈥檚 stewardship before his sacking after two league games.
"We've given everything to have a good season," Hjulmand added. "Let's not forget: there were big changes and a lot of new players.
"Seven first-team regulars left, 15 players without Bundesliga experience came in. It's only natural that things haven't all gone perfectly, and there are always aspects you can work on.
"There are lots of nuances you have to take into account and respect when analysing a season like this. It's not just black or white. I have great respect for my players and all the staff.
"And even though I'm never completely satisfied and always see a need for improvement, I'm quite happy with the team and the processes that are going on in the background."
