Metcalfe given run out in St Pauli win over Nice
Bundesliga side St Pauli beat Ligue 1 outfit Nice 2-0 in a pre-season friendly thanks to late goals from Scott Banks and Fin Stevens as Australia's Connor Metcalfe got a run out for the Hamburg side.
St Pauli dominated early on but failed to put away its chances, and it was Nice that almost took the lead when Evann Guessand fired just wide just after the half-hour mark.
Nice goalkeeper Maxime Dupe was kept busy in the second half before his resistance was breached in bizarre fashion when a ball into the box deflected in off the chin of Banks and into the goal on 84 minutes.
Five minutes later, Stevens doubled the lead with a more traditional strike to seal te result for the German side.
"We were very dominant. We had some decent moments in possession and our gegenpressing was outstanding," Pauli coach Alexander Blessin said after the match.
"We had lots of clear goal-scoring opportunities, including seven in the first half alone. In the end we should have won by more. We complicated things in the final third here and there and had a few problems getting people into the box."
