Neuer sidelined after goal celebration injury
Bayern Munich confirmed Manuel Neuer has torn a calf muscle after celebrating a goal in its 3-0 win over Bayer Leverkusen.
Neuer, who had made his 150th Champions League start in the game, was taken off in the 58th minute of their last 16 first-leg win, shortly after Jamal Musiala scored the second goal.
Vincent Kompany said the injury was caused in the goal celebrations, with Bayern confirming Neuer will be sidelined.
Though the club did not provide a timeline for Neuer's return, Sky Sports Germany reported the 38 year-old will miss Bayern's next four games, which includes the second leg of its tie against Leverkusen next week.
"Manuel Neuer suffered a torn muscle fibre in his right calf in the 3-0 win over Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League game on Wednesday evening," Bayern said in a statement.
"The diagnosis was confirmed by the FC Bayern medical unit. The record [Bundesliga] champions' goalkeeper will therefore be out for the foreseeable future."
Neuer has kept the joint-most clean sheets in the Bundesliga this season (11, level with Peter Gulacsi), and has conceded just 15 goals. He has also faced the fewest shots of any goalkeeper to play more than 10 games (133), making 23 saves.
Neuer had a spell on the sidelines earlier this season after breaking a rib in a DFB-Pokal loss to Leverkusen on 3 December.
He has had a number of injuries in recent years and was ruled out of action for 10 months after breaking his leg during a skiing holiday in December 2022.
