Blades stay sharp to hold off chasing pack
Second-placed Sheffield United edged past Preston North End 1-0 at Bramall Lane to keep Burnley at bay in the race for automatic promotion from the EFL Championship.
Tyrese Campbell's second goal in as many games secured the victory, with the Blades forward heading in a near-post cross from Harrison Burrows in the 56th minute.
Preston, managed by former United boss Paul Heckingbottom, defended tenaciously and made it difficult for the home side to break it down.
Having struck the woodwork through Sam Greenwood just before Campbell's goal, North End finished strongly but was unable to carve out an equaliser.
Preston, which faces Aston Villa in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup at the end of the month, is 16th on the table, but 11 points clear of the relegation zone.
For Sheffield United, the victory maintained the two-point gap between itself and third-placed Burnley after the Clarets win over Luton Town and kept it level on 76 points with league leader Leeds United, which will look to re-establish a three-point gap if it can win its match at Portsmouth on Monday (AEDT).
