Boro stays top after vital win over West Brom
Middlesbrough moved four points clear at the top of the EFL Championship after a 2-1 victory over promotion rival West Bromwich Albion at The Riverside on Saturday (AEST).
Goals in either half from new signings David Strelec and Kaly Sene ensured Rob Edwards' side took all three points, despite a late scare when Aune Heggebo pulled a goal back for the Baggies right on 90 minutes.
But Boro held on to secure the victory and move further ahead of second-placed Stoke City on the table ahead of the Potters' trip to Queens Park Rangers on Sunday (AEST).
West Brom had the better of the early exchanges but were caught out by a long throw on 26 minutes, Luke Ayling flicking the ball into the danger area with his head before Strelec poked home for his first goal for his new club on his first start.
The Baggies went into their shells somewhat after going behind, and Boro had the better chances up to the interval and went further ahead just after the hour mark.
An intricate string of passes eventually saw Sene receive the ball inside the box, and he blasted home emphatically to complete a sublime team move.
A late headed goal from Heggebo from Michael Johnston's looping cross gave the visiting support a glimmer of hope as the clock ticked into five added minutes, but it was not to be for West Brom, who couldn't open the Boro door again and suffered a second straight defeat as a result, leaving it sitting fifth on the table ahead of the weekend's other fixtures.
For Boro, meanwhile, it will spend another week at the top of the pile having won five out of its first six matches of the campaign.
