Frank Lampard's side would have sealed its place in next season's Premier League with victory, coupled with fourth-place Middlesbrough failing to beat Portsmouth later in the day.

The hosts came closest to breaking the deadlock during the first half at Coventry Building Society Arena. Liam Kitching's header was cleared off the line by Svante Ingelsson, while Brandon Thomas-Asante nodded over from a Haji Wright cross.

Wednesday almost snatched the lead early in the second half, with Jerry Yates volleying over Jaden Heskey's cross from inside the six-yard box.

However, it was Coventry that finished the stronger of the two sides, as it desperately pushed for the breakthrough.

Josh Eccles headed just wide from a Matt Grimes free-kick, while Ellis Simms's deflected overhead kick agonisingly clipped the outside of the post right at the death.
