The hosts went ahead early when Bobby De Cordova-Reid netted after only eight minutes, and Fatawu's sensational effort double the lead two minutes before the break, making a fool of goalkeeper Christian Walton.

Jordan Ayew made it 3-0 seven minutes into the second period before Ipswich managed to pull a goal back 19 minutes from time through Jens Cajuste, who made the most of an embarrassing goal-kick from Jakub Stolarczyk.

But it proved to be only a consoloation for the fifth-placed Tractor Boys, who lost for only the second time in their past 11 league matches.

Leicester's run of two wins and a draw in its past three matches has put it within touching distance of the top six after a challenging season to date, and this was only its second win at home since August, when it beat Birmingham City.

"It's a huge win and the performance was really strong," Foxes manager Marti Cifuentes said.

"We scored fantastic goals but we played at a high level. The first one helped us to start the game with a positive feeling which is important – very happy for Bobby who is showing how important he is to the team.

"This moment of brilliance and quality from Abdul – it's a fantastic goal, it's one of those which is very special and I am happy for him because he is a good boy who works hard and is improving all the time."

Ipswich boss Kieran McKenna couldn't hide his disappointment.

"The goals had a big bearing on it which is obvious to say but they've scored two worldies in the first half," he said.

"They've scored a goal just before half-time which is as good as you'll see anywhere and it changes the feeling for both sides. It simply wasn't our day."
