Players flee pitch amid chaotic scenes in Chile
The Copa Libertadores Group E match between Colo Colo and Fortaleza had to be suspended in the 72nd minute due to serious incidents inside and outside the Estadio Monumental in Santiago, Chile. A pitch invasion by local fans forced the Brazilian team's players to leave the field amid chaotic scenes.
Hours before kickoff, the situation around the stadium was already concerning. Authorities reported that a stampede at the entrances resulted in a tragic outcome: two fans lost their lives after being run over by a tear gas vehicle used by security forces to control the disorderly entry of supporters.
Despite these events, the match started as scheduled. However, as news of the two fans' deaths spread through the stands, tensions escalated among Colo Colo supporters. The situation deteriorated further when a group of fans stormed the pitch, forcing the suspension of the match.
CONMEBOL expressed its sorrow on Thursday over the death of two fans near the stadium shortly before the game began.
Both fans died on Friday after an incident involving the militarised police force, Carabineros de Chile, who are under investigation for their possible involvement.
Chilean prosecutors have launched an investigation to clarify the circumstances surrounding the deaths and establish responsibility. Video footage and witness statements are being reviewed to determine if there were failures in the security operation.
