Araujo grateful to Barca after mental health break
Ronald Araujo has revealed his gratitude towards his Barcelona team-mates, fans and the club after making his return from a mental health break by winning a trophy.
The 26-year-old was granted a leave of absence in November after receiving abuse after his red card against Chelsea in the UEFA Champions League.
Araujo returned to training at the end of December, and made his first appearance back in the team off the bench in its Supercopa de Espana final win over Real Madrid.
The defender has featured in 11 of Barca’s LaLiga games this season, winning 53.1 per cent of his duels, 50 per cent of his tackles, and scoring two goals for the current league leader.
Araujo, who is part of Hansi Flick’s leadership team at Barca, lifted the trophy after Barca defeated its Clasico rivals 3-2 in Saudi Arabia.
“I learned that stopping at the right time is self-love,” Araujo posted to social media.
“Taking care of your mind and heart is not giving up, it is trusting that God works even in silence. Stopping renewed me and allowed me to come back stronger.
“The process was not easy, but coming back like this is a privilege. Thank you to the club, my teammates and the fans for their treatment, affection and respect. It was beautiful to return lifting this trophy. We continue together.”
Raphinha scored twice in Barca’s victory over Los Blancos, directly contributing to five goals in its two Supercopa de Espana matches this term – four goals and one assist.
The Brazilian forward highlighted the importance of Araujo’s presence in the team after its win over Madrid.
“Ronald is a really important player for the team,” Raphinha said. “We are always going to be there for him and support him.
“He has been through a tough moment, but it's normal given the [job] we have, wearing this shirt, who we are. It could have happened to others as well.
“I have had rough times, my first two seasons here for example, but Ronald lifting this trophy was a demonstration of the affection we have for him. We are counting on him.”
