Liverpool announces Frimpong signing
Liverpool has kickstarted its summer transfer business by announcing the arrival of Bayer Leverkusen's Jeremie Frimpong on a five-year contract.
Just hours after announcing that Trent Alexander-Arnold would be joining Real Madrid in time to play at the FIFA Club World Cup, the Reds have moved quickly to sign his replacement.
The Premier League champion has triggered Frimpong's €35 million ($73.2 million) release clause, with the transfer expected to be fully completed when the window opens on Monday (AEST).
Frimpong played an integral role in helping Leverkusen to its first Bundesliga title in 2023-2024 and made 53 appearances in all competitions as it finished second in 2024-2025.
Indeed, the Dutch international has scored more goals (19) than any other defender in Europe's top five leagues in all competitions since the start of the 2023-2024 campaign.
Frimpong joins a Dutch contingent of Virgil van Dijk, Cody Gakpo and Ryan Gravenberch at Anfield, and could also welcome one of his former Leverkusen team-mates to Merseyside soon.
Liverpool is also in talks with Leverkusen over signing Florian Wirtz, with the Reds entering into advanced negotiations for the Germany forward in a deal reportedly worth £109 million ($228 million).
"It went quite easy. Liverpool came and said they had interest, and obviously for me, it was a no-brainer," Frimpong told Liverpool's official website.
"For me, it was like, 'Whatever you guys do, just get this done', [speaking to] my agents: 'Just get this done.'
"Liverpool fans, I'm going to give my all, my energy, my work-rate, and hopefully we can win together, we celebrate together, get everything together.
"I'm just excited to be here. Thank you guys for accepting me and I won't let you guys down, and I'll give you the energy that you guys want."
