Hurzeler admits in-form Brighton were 'lucky winners' against Bournemouth
Fabian Hurzeler admits his Brighton and Hove Albion side were fortunate to beat Bournemouth 2-1.
Fabian Hurzeler acknowledged Brighton were fortunate to snatch a 2-1 win over Bournemouth, igniting his side's European hopes and denting their opposition's same aspirations.
Hurzeler's side took the lead in the first half through Joao Pedro from the penalty spot after the Brazilian striker was fouled by Kepa Arrizabalaga.
However, Andoni Iraola's visitors hit back in the second half through a stunning strike from Justin Kluivert, who became the first Bournemouth player to score 10 Premier League away goals in one campaign.
Danny Welbeck stepped up to secure all three points for Brighton, though, with a left-footed finish just four minutes after replacing Joao Pedro from the bench.
Hurzeler was delighted his side came out on top for three straight Premier League wins for the first time since September 2023, though admitted Brighton were somewhat fortunate.
"It was a very intense game, both teams tried to score and tried to win," he told BBC Sport.
"The second half was an open game and in the end we were a lucky winner."
Welbeck proved to be the difference, scoring his 30th Premier League goal for Brighton, the joint-most for the club in the competition's history along with Pascal Gross.
"The most important thing for me is he is there as a leader and so important for the young players," Hurzeler said of Welbeck. "He does the right things and he got what he deserved today."
Brighton have won four on the bounce across all competitions since their heavy 7-0 defeat away to Nottingham Forest, leaving Hurzeler delighted with his side's response.
"We reflected on the Nottingham Forest game and we were honest and took responsibility for the loss and tried to get back to the basics so credit to the players and we're really happy with this reaction," he said.
Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola insisted he was content with his team's performance, despite succumbing to a second successive league defeat following Saturday's 1-0 loss to lowly Wolves.
"I'm quite pleased with the performance but Brighton were much better with scoring and Danny Welbeck had a great finish," Iraola told TNT Sports.
"We had clear chances, didn't score and they made us pay. All the second half we had been better, but didn't score the second goal and we have to blame ourselves for how we defended their second goal - it's a play we should've defended better.
"We thought we played good enough to get the points but we were not as good as Brighton in the boxes and they were much better at getting goals."
