Feyenoord stuns Bayern to leapfrog German giant
Feyenoord upset Bayern Munich with a 3-0 UEFA Champions League win that boosts the Dutch club's chances of a top-eight finish in the league phase.
The Eredivisie side moved a point ahead of its opponent with a sensational victory, now level on points with eighth-placed Bayer Leverkusen and poised to capitalise on any slip-ups in next week's final league fixtures.
Bayern could have moved into the top eight with victory but now faces an uphill battle to overhaul a number of teams between itself and a Round of 16 place.
Vincent Kompany's men will feel they should have come away from De Kuip with something after peppering the home goal, yet Santiago Gimenez's first-half double had Feyenoord in control.
Substitute Ayase Ueda put the game beyond doubt in the 89th minute.
Feyenoord is ahead of matchday eight opponent Lille on goals scored, thanks to Ueda's strike, while Bayern at least has a straightforward task on paper at home to Slovan Bratislava, which has yet to win a point.
Kompany, whose team hit the post in the second half through Leroy Sane and was thwarted by Feyenoord goalkeeper Justin Bijlow on multiple occasions, was unimpressed by his team's finishing.
"I have to be honest, Feyenoord deserved their win. They fought hard and ran," Kompany said.
"We had many chances. I felt we could have scored one, two or more goals. Feyenoord used their moments well.
"Individually and collectively it wasn't enough from our side today.
"We put the work in we gave it our all but the performance was not just good enough. We had our moments where we could have scored but we did not make the most of them."
The one-sided scoreline was at complete odds with the rest of the numbers from a frustrating match for Bayern.
It had 80 per cent of the possession and attempted 30 shots, yet they could not find the net.
Since 2003-2004, only two teams have attempted more shots in a UEFA Champions League match without scoring.
That outcome was as much owed to the brilliance of Bijlow as Bayern's failings, however.
While Feyenoord scored with all three of their shots on target, Bijlow made seven saves to keep Bayern at bay.
