The sixth seed expertly displayed craft and guile to move past Denis Shapovalov 6-3, 7-6 at the clay-court ATP Masters 1000. De Minaur stood firm in the face of 23 winners from Shapovalov and clinically mixed in variation to prevail, tying Carlos Alcaraz with a Tour-leading 24th win of the season.
“He’s got tremendous firepower from every part of the court, and I had to do my best to neutralise it, and not let him dictate as much as he could,” De Minaur said. “All in all, I’m super happy with the way I competed today.”
De Minaur is now into his fifth consecutive Masters 1000 round of 16, where he awaits the winner of Wednesday's clash between Stefanos Tsitsipas and Lorenzo Musetti. The Australian has also shown impressive clay-court acumen this year, with runs to the semi-finals in Monte-Carlo and quarter-finals in Barcelona.
