Gauff battles back from the brink to avoid Wimbledon upset
Solana Sierra seemed set to dump Coco Gauff out of Wimbledon, but the American battled back in a thrilling third-set tie-break.
Coco Gauff avoided a major upset at Wimbledon as she fought back to claim a thrilling victory over Solana Sierra.
Gauff breezed through the opening set in this second-round contest, yet world number 56 Sierra flipped the script in the second.
And Gauff ultimately needed to battle back from three points down in a third-set tie-break to prevail 6-3 3-6 7-6 (10-7).
Gauff rushed into a two-game lead with an early break, but she then conceded on her own serve to give Sierra a sniff in the opening set.
But Gauff was relentless from there in the first set, which she wrapped up with a third set point on her own serve.
Sierra, however, got straight onto the front foot in set two, surging into a 3-0 lead before Gauff eventually held to love.
The American, however, could not close the gap, with Sierra keeping her advantage intact to tee up a decider.
Sierra clinched the first break of a nervy final set, but at 5-4 up, the Argentine could not serve out a shock win.
She appeared to have put that wobble behind her as she powered into a 7-4 lead in the 10-point tie-break, yet Gauff was not done.
The two-time major winner reeled off the next six points, sending her into a third-round contest against compatriot Claire Liu.
Gauff keeps up second-round perfection... just about
It has not been a good season for Gauff, and she is seeded seventh for the year's third major.
In fact, she is appearing at a grand slam without being seeded in the top five for the first time since the 2023 US Open, when she went on to win her maiden major crown.
And it really did look as though she would be on the end of a giant-killing.
But, she just about got over the line, and Gauff has now won her last 16 second-round matches at the majors, with her last such defeat coming against Sloane Stephens at Flushing Meadows in 2021.
Gauff is also undefeated in the second round at Wimbledon, but that record was so very nearly snapped.
