“Today was a really tough match. I knew that before today I never beat him and we played five times," Musetti said after his win.
"Especially on clay, I knew against a three-time champion, definitely not an easy job today.
"I found a way and I was increasing during the whole match. Really, really happy and proud of this win.”
Musetti, who won bronze at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, was on the verge of tears after winning match point.
"It's really beautiful to cry together and win together. It's really nice," Musetti said, describing the moment he hugged his team on the sidelines.
Musetti could crack the world's top 10 for the first time should he win his biggest career title in Monte Carlo, which would be his first on clay.
