At McLaren, They Are Glad They No Longer Have to Deal With Christian Horner at Red Bull; They Now Have a “Healthier” Relationship
Zak Brown believes that F1 is in a healthier place following Christian Horner's departure from Red Bull. McLaren welcomes the arrival of Laurent Mekies and the new atmosphere in the paddock.
A change of mood at Red Bull that McLaren appreciates
Zak Brown, CEO of McLaren, has been emphatic: the atmosphere between his team and Red Bull has improved since Christian Horner's departure. The executive, who never hid his tense relationship with Horner, revealed that the relationship is now much more respectful and healthy thanks to the arrival of Laurent Mekies as the new head of the Austrian team.
A historic rivalry: McLaren vs Horner
Zak Brown makes no secret of his satisfaction with the new approach taken by Red Bull under Mekies' leadership. Although he acknowledges that politics is a natural part of the sport, he believes that there is now greater maturity and professionalism among the teams.
“Before, that line was crossed. Today, we still fight politically, but with more limits and respect. I think this is much healthier for everyone,” he said.
He also highlighted that there is now greater trust in internal discussions:
“Today we know that what we talk about will not be used as a political weapon. That changes everything.”
Farewell to a controversial era
Christian Horner was removed as team principal after the British Grand Prix, ending a 20-year tenure at the helm of Red Bull. During his tenure, he won multiple championships, but he was also embroiled in controversy and decisions questioned by rivals such as McLaren.
For Brown, his departure represents an opportunity for improvement not only for Red Bull, but for the entire Formula 1 ecosystem.
“Now the relationship with Red Bull is healthier. That's good for everyone.”
