Patrick Vellner Withdraws from 2025 CrossFit Games, Citing Athlete Safety Concerns
One of the most dominant athletes in CrossFit, Canadian Patrick Vellner, has announced that he will not compete in the 2025 CrossFit Games, citing athlete safety concerns and leadership issues. He also referenced Lazar Đukić’s departure in the previous edition as a significant factor in his decision.
"I’ve decided not to compete in the 2025 CrossFit Games season. Sometimes, the best way to push for change is to take action, and this year I’m taking a stand by voting with my feet," Vellner shared on Instagram, urging followers to swipe through a series of images for more details.

Vellner, a multiple-time CrossFit Games podium finisher, expressed frustration with CrossFit’s leadership, stating that years of athlete concerns about safety, fairness, and the sport’s direction have been ignored.
"For years, I’ve dedicated an enormous amount of time, energy, and passion to the CrossFit Games, but it has become increasingly difficult to justify that commitment. I can’t continue to pour my heart into an organization that doesn’t seem to support its athletes."
Lazar Đukić’s Tragic Death: A Catalyst for Change

Vellner pointed to the tragic passing of Lazar Đukić in 2024 as a turning point, believing that leadership decisions within the CrossFit Games played a role in the circumstances.
"Last summer, I lost a friend. Lazar’s death was a tragedy, and while multiple factors were at play, I believe leadership decisions within the CrossFit Games team contributed. CrossFit Inc.'s response—or lack thereof—has made one thing clear: meaningful change is not coming anytime soon."
Vellner Calls for Athlete Safety Reforms
Vellner’s statement underscores the urgent need for safety reforms, including a truly independent safety council with decision-making power during the CrossFit Games, as well as better athlete communication and support.
"For our sport to evolve, athlete concerns, safety, and well-being must be a priority—not dismissed, belittled, or ignored. I’m done being patient and trusting, and I’m done shouting into the void."
With Patrick Vellner stepping away, his absence delivers a major blow to the 2025 CrossFit Games, raising serious questions about the future of athlete relations, competition standards, and the integrity of the sport.
