Over more than two decades, Lionel Messi did much more than collect trophies with Argentina. He consistently broke records that had stood for years and finished his international career with 207 appearances and 125 goals, making him both Argentina's all-time appearance leader and record goalscorer.
Lionel Messi's Records With the Argentina National Team
From his all-time marks with the Albiceleste to his records at the World Cup, Copa América and South American Qualifiers, Lionel Messi ended his international career holding some of the biggest records in national-team football.
Those numbers, however, represent only part of the historic marks established by the Argentine captain.
The World Cup Record Breaker
The FIFA World Cup holds a special place among Messi's records. After appearing in the 2006, 2010, 2014, 2018, 2022 and 2026 tournaments, he became one of the very few players to feature at six World Cups.
With 34 appearances, Messi holds the record for the most matches played in World Cup history. He finished his career in the competition with 21 goals, placing him second on the all-time scoring list behind only Kylian Mbappé, who reached 22.
Messi also recorded 23 World Cup victories, another competition record, and remains the only player ever to win the World Cup Golden Ball twice, earning the award at Brazil 2014 and Qatar 2022.
In Qatar, he established another unique mark by becoming the first player to score in the group stage, round of 16, quarterfinals, semifinals and final at the same World Cup.
The Copa América Appearance Record
Messi also made history in the CONMEBOL Copa América.
He played 39 matches across seven editions, from Venezuela 2007 through the United States in 2024, giving him the record for the most appearances in the history of the competition.
Across those tournaments, Messi scored 14 goals, reached five finals and ultimately lifted back-to-back Copa América trophies in 2021 and 2024.
South American Qualifying's All-Time Leading Scorer
The CONMEBOL World Cup Qualifiers provided another collection of records. Messi made 72 appearances, tying Ecuador's Iván Hurtado for the most matches played in South American qualifying history.
His scoring record stands alone: with 36 goals, Messi became the all-time leading scorer in CONMEBOL World Cup qualifying.
Between his 207 appearances, 125 goals, six World Cups, Copa América records and unprecedented World Cup achievements, Messi ended an international career defined by far more than trophies. He also left behind many of the most significant records in the history of Argentina and international football.
