Luis Garcia was Toluca's hero as his penalty save sealed a 6-5 shoot-out victory over Tigres UANL in the Champions Cup final.

Garcia kept out Juan Jose Purata's spot-kick at the Estadio Nemesio Diez, sealing Toluca's third continental title.

Toluca took the lead through Jorge Diaz early in extra time, following a goalless 90 minutes.

Tigres had created the better chances, though, and they finally got the goal their performance merited when Joaquim headed in from Juan Brunetta's 114th-minute free-kick.

Having converted their first four penalties in the shoot-out, Toluca were on the brink of victory when Franco Romero stepped up, only for Tigres shot-stopper Nahuel Guzman to make the save.

But Garcia, who had made a fantastic double save earlier on, came up with the goods in sudden death.

This marks Toluca's first continental title since 2003, and it has ensured their place in the 2029 Club World Cup.

Tigres, though, gave it all they could. They had eight shots on target, which is the joint-most Toluca have conceded in a game in the competition this season.

Indeed, Tigres finished with 2.06 expected goals to Toluca's 0.74.

However, 0.90 of Tigres' xG total came from one chance, when club great Andre-Pierre Gignac, who is set to leave, failed to apply the finish on the rebound after Garcia had made an impressive save.
