OFFICIAL: Thomas Tuchel to Leave Bayern Munich at End of Season
The German club announced that they have reached an agreement with the coach to part ways once the current season concludes.
Thomas Tuchel will not continue as the coach of FC Bayern next season, confirmed the German club after various reports circulated in several German media outlets.
"In an open and honest conversation, we reached the decision to end our association in the summer. Our goal is to embark on a new sporting direction next season with a new coach," said Bayern's Supervisory Board President, Jan-Christian Dreesen.
"Until then, everyone in the club must give their all to achieve the best possible results in the Bundesliga and the Champions League," he added.
Tuchel arrived at Bayern in the second half of last season to replace the dismissed Julian Nagelsmann, after the Bavarian club lost the lead to Borussia Dortmund, which had cut their lead to twelve points.
Although Tuchel ultimately won the Bundesliga with Bayern, due to a collapse by Dortmund on the final matchday, the team's performance was far from convincing during his time in charge.
Furthermore, there appeared to be communication issues between him and some of the senior players in the dressing room.
Relations with the club's leadership have also been problematic, as Tuchel has frequently complained about some decisions in the transfer market and demanded players he did not receive.
This season, Bayern started by losing the German Supercup to Leipzig, were eliminated early from the German Cup, and in the Bundesliga, they trail the leaders, Bayer Leverkusen, by eight points.
The past week, with three consecutive defeats - against Leverkusen and Bochum in the Bundesliga and against Lazio in the Champions League - may have precipitated the decision.
The comeback against Leverkusen is not impossible but unlikely, and Dreesen, in his statement, emphasized the need to advance to the Champions League quarter-finals, for which the team must overturn the 1-0 deficit from the first leg against Lazio.
"I am convinced that in the Champions League, with the Allianz Arena and the support of our fans, we will reach the quarter-finals," he said.
