LDU Quito Stun São Paulo in Brazil and Advance to the Semifinals
LDU Quito wrote a historic chapter in the Copa Libertadores by defeating São Paulo 0-1 at the Morumbí, sealing their quarterfinal tie with a 3-0 aggregate and returning to the tournament’s semifinals after 17 years. The Ecuadorian side will now face Palmeiras, who eliminated River Plate in the previous round.
Jeison Medina’s goal and Ecuadorian resilience
Tiago Nunes’ team had a clear plan: defend solidly and strike at the right moment. For the first half-hour, Hernán Crespo’s São Paulo pressed relentlessly, but the visitors’ backline and the safe hands of goalkeeper Gonzalo Valle kept the home side from breaking the deadlock.
The reward for their discipline came in the 41st minute. Colombian Jeison Medina latched onto a quick counterattack, got behind Alan Franco, and slotted a low shot inside the left post past goalkeeper Rafael, silencing the Morumbí and virtually sealing the tie.
São Paulo tried, but fell short
Needing three goals to stay alive, the Paulista side threw everything forward in the second half. Luciano even found the net, but the goal was ruled out for offside. Later, a chaotic play in the box ended with a collision between the striker and the visiting keeper, spoiling another clear chance.

Despite dominating possession, São Paulo lacked ideas and kept repeating a predictable script that the Ecuadorians read with ease. LDU Quito stayed composed, closed down spaces, and defended with discipline until the final whistle, celebrating a qualification that marks a milestone for both the club and Ecuadorian football.
With authority and a well-executed plan, LDU are back among South America’s final four and will now take on powerhouse Palmeiras in a semifinal that promises maximum intensity.
