Messi and Inter Miami disappoint in Club World Cup opener with goalless draw
In their 2025 Club World Cup debut, Inter Miami, coached by Javier Mascherano, was held to a 0–0 draw by Al Ahly at Hard Rock Stadium. Messi led the attack but couldn’t break the deadlock.
Goalless Start on Home Soil
The 2025 Club World Cup kicked off with a goalless draw between Inter Miami and Al Ahly at Miami’s Hard Rock Stadium. Veteran goalkeeper Óscar Ustari, 38, was the standout performer, saving a penalty from Trezeguet just before halftime and making several key stops to keep Mascherano's side in the game.
The Egyptian club started strong and created chances early. Inter Miami's defense had to withstand sustained pressure, but Ustari’s experience and quick reflexes made the difference.
Messi Tried, But It Wasn’t Enough
In the second half, the spotlight turned to Lionel Messi, who led Inter Miami's offensive push and nearly scored twice. The closest chance came in the 97th minute, when his powerful strike was denied by a brilliant save from Mohamed El Shenawy.
Messi was chasing his 50th goal for the American club, but precision and luck weren’t on his side. Despite flashes of brilliance, Inter Miami lacked the final touch in the attacking third.
Draw Raises Early Questions
The draw leaves Inter Miami under pressure heading into their next group stage match against Porto. A win will be crucial to keep their hopes of advancing alive in Group A.
Attendance at Hard Rock Stadium was underwhelming, and although the atmosphere was lively, the scoreless result left fans wanting more. With stars like Messi, Luis Suárez, and Sergio Busquets on the field, expectations were high for a statement victory.

The debut didn’t go as planned: no goals, questions about team chemistry, and Messi still searching for his 50th goal with Inter Miami. The 2025 Club World Cup has only just begun, but the margin for error is already narrow. Will the first win come in the next game?
