Joao Pedro Scores a Screamer Against His Former Team Just Six Days After Signing With Chelsea
In a story worthy of a movie script, Brazilian forward Joao Pedro had a dream debut with Chelsea at the 2025 Club World Cup, scoring a stunning goal against Fluminense, the club where he began his professional career. Just six days after his signing was made official, the striker repaid Enzo Maresca’s trust in the best possible way — and against a very meaningful opponent.
From vacation to international spotlight in record time
Joao Pedro’s arrival at Chelsea was announced on July 2, while the player was still on vacation in Brazil. His adaptation, however, was remarkably fast: he made his debut on July 4 in the quarterfinals against Palmeiras, and was named in the starting XI against Fluminense in Tuesday’s semifinal. He replaced the suspended Liam Delap, and certainly seized the opportunity.
In the first half, Joao Pedro took advantage of a poor clearance by Fluminense, picked up the ball near the left edge of the box, and unleashed a powerful right-footed shot that beat goalkeeper Fábio. It was his first goal for Chelsea, and a statement of intent — especially against the team where he first made a name for himself.
Chelsea boosted by returning stars and youth talent
Chelsea lined up with: Robert Sánchez; Malo Gusto, Chalobah, Adarabioyo, Cucurella; Moisés Caicedo, Enzo Fernández; Pedro Neto, Cole Palmer, Nkunku, and Joao Pedro. The return of Ecuadorian Moisés Caicedo was also crucial. After missing the match against Palmeiras due to suspension, the midfielder returned full of energy.
“We’re happy to have Moi back with us. He’s been very important this season,” said Enzo Maresca during the pre-match press conference.
On the other side, Fluminense coach Renato Gaúcho fielded: Fábio; Guga, Ignacio, Thiago Silva, Renê, Thiago Santos; Hércules, F. Bernal, G. Nonato; Jhon Arias and Germán Cano.
A dream come true and a clear message
“Playing for Chelsea has always been my dream,” said Joao Pedro to the press. Scoring his first goal for the club — and doing it against the team that raised him — shows he’s ready to shine. The young forward expressed his gratitude but remained focused: “Now I defend this jersey, and I have to give my all.”
His performance against Fluminense not only confirmed his swift adaptation but also positioned him as one of the breakout stars of the tournament. With just a few days at the club, Joao Pedro is already writing his story in London… one goal at a time.
