Macron Set To Attend World Cup Final if France Defeats Spain
French President Emmanuel Macron will not attend France's World Cup semifinal against Spain due to national commitments on Bastille Day, but he is expected to travel to New York if Les Bleus reach the final.
French President Emmanuel Macron is expected to support the national team in person if France reaches the 2026 FIFA World Cup final. According to L'Équipe, Macron plans to travel to New York for the championship match should Les Bleus defeat Spain in the semifinals.
Macron will miss Tuesday's semifinal because it coincides with Bastille Day, France's national holiday. As head of state, he will preside over the traditional military parade in Paris before traveling to Nice for the main ceremony marking the tenth anniversary of the 2016 terrorist attack that claimed 86 lives.
Although the Élysée Palace has yet to officially confirm the trip, it would continue Macron's tradition of supporting the French national team at major international tournaments.
The French president attended both the semifinal and final of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, where France narrowly lost to Argentina in a dramatic penalty shootout. He was also present at the 2018 World Cup semifinal in Russia, when France defeated Belgium on its way to lifting the trophy.
France earned its place in the 2026 semifinals after defeating Morocco 2-0 and now faces Spain with a place in the World Cup final at stake. Should Les Bleus advance, Macron is expected to be in the stands at MetLife Stadium to cheer on his country's quest for another world title.
