ALL GOALS: United States vs México | International Friendly

United States Rout Mexico in First Friendly Since the 2026 FIFA World Cup

The United States defeated Mexico 3-0 at Glendale, Arizona, in the first major showdown of the new era for both national teams following the 2026 World Cup. The result handed Rafael Márquez his first defeat as Mexico head coach and also gave Mauricio Pochettino his first victory over Mexico as USMNT head coach.

THE UNITED STATES STRUCK AT KEY MOMENTS

Mexico started the match with greater initiative and had chances to take the lead, but the United States capitalized on a lapse in concentration to open the scoring in the 27th minute. Julian Hall was in the right place inside the penalty area to collect a loose ball after a move involving Sebastian Berhalter and Gio Reyna, before finding the back of the net.

The decisive blow came in the second half. In the 62nd minute, Cavan Sullivan intercepted a pass from Raúl Rangel as the Mexican goalkeeper attempted to play out from the back outside the penalty area.

The young American was left with a virtually open goal and calmly finished to make it 2-0, becoming the youngest player to score for the United States national team.

MEXICO WENT DOWN TO 10 AND WAS PUT AWAY

Mexico lost even more ground in the 68th minute, when Mateo Chávez was shown a straight red card for striking Sebastian Berhalter in the face after a foul on Yunus Musah. The sending-off sparked a heated confrontation between players and left El Tri with 10 men.

The final blow arrived in the 85th minute. Malik Tillman capitalized on another mistake by Mexico while playing out from the back, won possession, beat the challenge from Diego Campillo and fired past Raúl Rangel to make it 3-0.

With this result, the United States made a strong statement in the new era, while Mauricio Pochettino finally secured a victory over Mexico and Rafael Márquez suffered his first defeat as head coach of El Tri.
