Frenkie de Jong confirms he’s set to renew with Barcelona
FC Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong told Dutch media he’s confident he’ll sign a new deal with the Catalan club this summer. His current contract runs until June 30, 2026.
Both sides want it to happen
“I think I’ll sign a new contract with Barça. I can’t say I’m 100% sure, but if everything goes smoothly, it’ll get done. I’m aiming to extend it this summer, but we’ll see what happens. It’s a negotiation—you never know exactly when it’ll be finalized. What matters is that both sides want it, and I believe we’ll reach an agreement,” he said in an interview with Voetbalzone.
De Jong, who chose not to comment on rumors of a possible split with his agent Ali Dursun, spoke after playing the full 90 minutes in Netherlands’ 2–0 win over Finland in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
Support from the club’s top brass
His comments echo what Barcelona’s sporting director Anderson Luis de Souza 'Deco' said recently. Deco praised De Jong’s role in the club’s recent success—winning LaLiga, the Spanish Super Cup, and the Copa del Rey, plus making the Champions League semifinals—and made it clear the club wants to get the renewal done this summer.
After missing the start of the season due to injury and facing some criticism in past years, De Jong bounced back strongly in the second half of the campaign. He locked down a spot in midfield, building a solid partnership with Pedro González 'Pedri' under new manager Hansi Flick. The Dutch international joined Barcelona in the summer of 2019 from Ajax, and since then has racked up 259 appearances, scoring 19 goals and providing 21 assists for the club.
