FC Barcelona celebrated its home opener with a 2-0 victory over Athletic Club at the Spotify Camp Nou, dominating a match that could easily have ended with a much bigger margin.
Barcelona Beats Athletic Club, but Unai Simón Prevents a Rout at Camp Nou
Raphinha and Fermín López scored the goals for Hansi Flick’s side, but one of the biggest protagonists of the night was Unai Simón. The Athletic Club goalkeeper produced a remarkable collection of saves to prevent the match from turning into a rout.
Raphinha Finally Breaks Unai Simón’s Resistance
FC Barcelona took control from the opening minutes. Its high press immediately caused problems for Athletic Club, while Lamine Yamal quickly became a constant threat from the right wing.
The Spanish youngster repeatedly tried his trademark move, cutting inside onto his left foot. In the 18th minute, he found the target, but Unai Simón responded with a spectacular save.
Five minutes later, Raphinha came even closer, powering a header against the post. In the 28th minute, Pedri even found the back of the net following a cross from Anthony Gordon, but the goal was ruled out for offside against the Englishman.
Athletic Club’s resistance finally ended in the 36th minute. Pedri delivered a perfect through ball for Raphinha, who found himself one-on-one with Unai Simón, rounded the goalkeeper and finished to make it 1-0.
Lamine Yamal Ignites Barcelona’s Attack
Barça’s dominance increased after halftime. In the 52nd minute, Lamine Yamal won possession on the edge of the box and unleashed a spectacular left-footed strike that crashed against the crossbar before bouncing out.
Fermín López also became increasingly influential. He first forced Unai Simón into another save after an excellent combination with Lamine Yamal, before producing a superb volley that was once again denied by the goalkeeper.
Athletic Club had its biggest opportunity in the 74th minute. A mistake from Eric García gave Oihan Sancet the space to shoot, but his effort struck the post.
The scare immediately woke Barça up again.
In the 81st minute, Aymeric Laporte left a dangerous loose ball inside the penalty area, and Fermín López reacted quickly to capitalize on the mistake and score the 2-0.
Unai Simón Prevents a Rout
The margin could have become much bigger during the closing stages. Lamine Yamal delivered a perfect cross for Karim Adeyemi, but Unai Simón produced an extraordinary left-leg save from point-blank range.
Moments later, Adeyemi found himself with another clear sight of goal, only for the Spanish goalkeeper to deny him once again.
Unai Simón’s outstanding performance ultimately prevented a scoreline that, based on the number and quality of FC Barcelona’s opportunities, could have become emphatic.
It was also a special night for Rodri Hernández, who played his first minutes in an FC Barcelona shirt.
The champions delivered at home: victory, control and chance after chance. The 2-0 scoreline explains who won, but it does not fully reflect just how dominant FC Barcelona was at the Spotify Camp Nou.
