Brahim Díaz Replaces Rodrygo Goes: The Change That Xabi Alonso Is No Longer Hiding
Brahim Díaz wins the starting spot over Rodrygo Goes in Xabi Alonso's Real Madrid. The Brazilian breaks his scoring drought, but his role and future remain in doubt.
Xabi Alonso's message
Real Madrid's friendly against WSG Tirol (0-4) not only served to fine-tune details ahead of their debut. It also sent a clear message from Xabi Alonso: Brahim Díaz is ahead of Rodrygo Goes in the battle for a starting spot.
The coach opted for the Malaga-born player, leaving the Brazilian in the second unit. Rodrygo came on in the last half hour, scored the 0-4 and almost got a brace, but the feeling is that his role is shaping up to be secondary.
A change in the attacking hierarchy
This situation is not new. In the last Club World Cup, Brahim had already surpassed Rodrygo in minutes played, something that seems to be repeating itself now. The return of Éder Militao in defense and the consolidation of Arda Güler in midfield are signs of renewal, and up front, the new order is evident with Vinícius Jr., Kylian Mbappé, and Brahim Díaz.
The arrival of Franco Mastantuono, who can play in the same position as Rodrygo, further complicates the options.
Rodrygo's future is uncertain
Real Madrid will make their LaLiga EA Sports debut on August 19 against Osasuna at the Santiago Bernabéu. They will then travel to Oviedo (August 24) and host Mallorca (August 30) before the international break. These three games will be key: if Rodrygo continues to start from the bench, the decision on his future could come before the transfer window closes.
