What Would It Take for Trent Alexander-Arnold to Return to England?

Trent Alexander-Arnold is only beginning his second season with Real Madrid, but a question is already gaining traction in England: what would it take for the defender to return to the Premier League? According to former player Stephen Warnock, there is only one destination that would make sense—and it is certainly not just any club.

The England international left Liverpool in 2025 after a historic spell at Anfield and signed with Los Blancos through 2031. For now, there are no signs of an imminent departure, although speculation about his long-term future continues.

THE ONLY CLUB THAT COULD BRING HIM BACK

According to Stephen Warnock, if Alexander-Arnold ever decided to return to England, the only move that would make sense would be a return to Liverpool. It is about more than soccer: the defender was born in the city, joined the club's academy at six years old and made his first-team debut in 2016.

With the Reds, the right-back enjoyed a trophy-filled career. He won two Premier League titles, one Champions League, one FA Cup, two League Cups, one UEFA Super Cup, one FIFA Club World Cup and one Community Shield.

His move to Real Madrid came in 2025, when the Spanish club paid a fee to bring him in before his Liverpool contract expired. In Madrid, the Englishman shares the dressing room with Jude Bellingham and currently works under manager José Mourinho.

However, a return does not appear to be close. Warnock believes Alexander-Arnold still has plenty to offer in Spain and that Premier League clubs have the financial power to try to bring him back, but he does not expect such a move anytime soon.

CONTRACT UNTIL 2031 AND A FUTURE STILL IN MADRID

The biggest obstacle to any potential return is contractual. Alexander-Arnold is under contract with Real Madrid until 2031, meaning any transfer would depend on the player's desire to leave and negotiations between the two clubs.

His sporting future in Madrid also remains far from settled. At the start of the 2026-27 season, the defender has made three LaLiga appearances and recorded one assist, according to the club's official statistics.

For now, then, this is less about an imminent return and more about a potential future scenario. If Trent Alexander-Arnold ever decides to return to the Premier League, one name stands above the rest: Liverpool.

The reason is simple: Anfield would not just be another destination—it would be a return home. And while English soccer has the financial muscle to tempt the defender, his Real Madrid contract through 2031 and his current project in Spain make any return, for now, a long-term possibility.
