How Much Will James Rodríguez Earn at Mexico’s León?
Club León of Mexico has confirmed the signing of James Rodríguez, a player who leaves Rayo Vallecano without much of a legacy to boast about.
With the goal of regaining his top form a year before the 2026 World Cup, the Colombian arrives as one of the most high-profile signings for the eight-time Liga MX champions.
How Much Will James Rodríguez Earn in Mexico?
According to Mexican media, James has signed a one-year contract with León, with an option for an additional year. His salary is reportedly $5 million annually, along with a $2 million signing bonus.
James Rodríguez’s Short Spell at Rayo Vallecano
The Colombian’s time at Rayo Vallecano was brief, having joined the club on August 26, 2024, and departing just four and a half months later after playing only 203 minutes across seven matches (six in La Liga and one in the Copa del Rey), starting in just two of them.
The enthusiasm with which James arrived in Vallecas—hoping to prove himself again in La Liga after being named the best player of the 2024 Copa América—faded quickly. From the start, he was relegated to a secondary role, and coach Iñigo Pérez never considered him a viable option for the starting eleven.
In his midfield and attacking roles, players like Jorge de Frutos, Unai López, Isi Palazón, and Oscar Trejo were favored over him, a factor that influenced his decision to terminate his contract and seek playing time elsewhere.
The last time James was included in a matchday squad was on December 7, 2024, when he sat on the bench against Valencia but did not play. He also remained an unused substitute in games against Girona, Alavés, Athletic Club, Sevilla, and Valencia.
From Rayo’s first team, only one player had fewer minutes than James (203): forward Raúl de Tomás, with 90. It’s rumored that de Tomás might also leave during the winter transfer window if a suitable offer arises and the conditions benefit the club.
