River Plate Protects Young Star Amid Reported Benfica Transfer Interest

  • The Portuguese giants are reportedly monitoring Lautaro Pereyra, an 18-year-old midfielder emerging in River Plate's first team. The Argentine club has already secured its promising talent with a massive release clause.

River Plate is preparing for potential European interest in one of its brightest young prospects. Lautaro Pereyra, an 18-year-old attacking midfielder, has reportedly attracted the attention of Benfica, which is monitoring his development ahead of future transfer windows.

According to reports from Argentina and Portugal, the Lisbon club is keeping a close eye on the youngster, although no formal offer has been submitted and no negotiations have been confirmed.

Meanwhile, River has already protected the player's future with a contract running until December 2028 and a reported €100 million release clause.

Who Is Lautaro Pereyra, the River Plate Talent Linked With Benfica?

Lautaro Pereyra is an attacking midfielder developed through River Plate's youth academy, where he has established himself as one of the club's promising prospects.

The youngster can operate as a traditional playmaker, in an advanced midfield role, or in wider attacking positions.

His dribbling ability, movement between the lines, and technical qualities have helped him progress through River's youth system.

Pereyra made his senior debut on April 5, 2026, during a 3-0 victory over Belgrano, under head coach Eduardo Coudet.

Since then, the midfielder has made 14 first-team appearances across all competitions, recording one goal and one assist.

His first senior goal came on May 20, when he scored a dramatic stoppage-time equalizer against Red Bull Bragantino in the CONMEBOL Sudamericana, securing a 1-1 draw for River Plate

River Plate Secures Pereyra With a Massive Release Clause

River's management, led by president Stéfano Di Carlo, had already taken significant steps to protect the midfielder's long-term future.

In January 2026, Pereyra signed his first professional contract, keeping him at the Argentine club until December 31, 2028.

The agreement reportedly includes a €100 million release clause, reflecting River's intention to retain control over the future of its most promising academy graduates.

The deal was completed several months before the latest reports linking Pereyra with Benfica, meaning it was not a newly negotiated response to the Portuguese club's reported interest.

However, those contractual terms could strengthen River's negotiating position should European clubs pursue the midfielder.

Benfica Continues Monitoring Argentina's Young Talents

Benfica has a well-established history of recruiting promising Argentine players.

In 2022, the Portuguese club signed Enzo Fernández from River Plate, before the midfielder eventually moved to the Premier League.

The Eagles followed a similar approach in January 2024, signing Gianluca Prestianni, another highly rated Argentine youngster developed at Vélez Sarsfield.

Pereyra is now reportedly among the prospects being monitored by the Lisbon club as it considers future additions.

Reports suggest River could receive European approaches during the January 2027 transfer window.

However, Benfica has not submitted a confirmed formal offer for Pereyra, and no transfer agreement has been reached.

For now, River Plate remains focused on developing its young midfielder, while interest from European clubs could become an important storyline in the months ahead.
