Scaloni Gives Lionel Messi the Green Light to Play for Inter Miami Instead of Argentina
Lionel Messi plays for Inter Miami while Argentina leaves him out of the squad. Javier Mascherano reveals the conversation that gave the green light and sparks controversy during the FIFA window.
Messi continues with Inter Miami
What seemed impossible happened: Lionel Messi was able to suit up for Inter Miami during the FIFA window, a move that sparked global football debate. According to Javier Mascherano, the U.S. club’s coach and Messi’s former teammate, the decision came after a direct conversation with Argentina’s manager Lionel Scaloni.
“It’s simple. Yesterday, before the match, I spoke with Scaloni, and he told me he wouldn’t use him. Then I spoke with Leo, and there’s not much more to it. He had no plans to play for the national team, and we saw the opportunity to line him up with us,” Mascherano explained.
The result was overwhelming: Inter Miami thrashed Atlanta United 4-0, with Messi scoring a brace and providing assists, proving that even without training with the team all week, he remains a decisive force.
The Decision That Sparked Debate
Messi playing during the FIFA window did not go unnoticed and generated criticism and debate among fans and experts. Is it appropriate for a player of his level to skip the national team to play in the MLS? Mascherano, aware of the controversy, clarified that everything was handled with transparency and respect for Argentina.
“Leo was willing to play with us. He’s a truly special player, and even though he didn’t train with us, he helped us win and scored important goals. The victory was also crucial to secure third place in the standings,” the coach added.
What Scaloni Said
Scaloni made it clear to Mascherano that he wouldn’t include Messi in the match against Venezuela. This decision opened the door for La Pulga to play with his club, while Argentina faced international commitments.
Mascherano emphasized the respect shown toward the national team and the careful handling of the situation: “We thank the Argentine national team for giving us the chance to have him. I don’t like to interfere or get in the way; we just respected what Scaloni considered best for the team.”
Messi’s Immediate Future
What happens next with Messi remains uncertain. Argentina will face Puerto Rico while Inter Miami returns to training after a couple of days off. Mascherano acknowledged that there is still no official word on his return to the national squad: “I don’t know yet if he will rejoin the national team; we’ll see if the federation or the coach contacts us.”
For now, looks that Messi is happy playing, contributing, and proving he can still be decisive on any pitch, as the world watches closely how his schedule will be managed ahead of next year’s World Cup.
