Turner targets World Cup after returning to New England Revolution
One year out from the World Cup being co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico, Matt Turner is back in his home country.
Matt Turner is eyeing a return to the United States' starting lineup after rejoining the New England Revolution on loan from Lyon.
Turner only joined Lyon from Nottingham Forest in an €8m (£6.74m) deal in June, but the French club's financial troubles led them to sanction a temporary move for the goalkeeper last week.
Turner first left New England in 2022, joining Premier League giants Arsenal. After struggling for minutes with the Gunners, he moved to Forest and had a loan spell with Crystal Palace, though he only spent half a season as Forest's starting goalkeeper in 2023-24 and was backup to Dean Henderson at Selhurst Park.
During his last spell in New England, Turner made 111 appearances and was awarded the 2021 MLS Goalkeeper of the Year award, and he hopes a return will help his international prospects.
Turner lost his place as the USA's starting goalkeeper for the CONCACAF Gold Cup, as Mauricio Pochettino's team finished as runners-up to Mexico with Matt Freese between the sticks.
With a home World Cup on the horizon next year, Turner knows he needs to impress back on home soil.
He told reporters: "My European adventure didn't go perfectly to plan, but I did learn a lot along the way.
"I had some misfortunes, I had some opportunities that I didn't make the most of as well."
Asked about Pochettino's decision to drop him from the USA's starting lineup, Turner added: "Sometimes you're just in a cycle and you need somebody to help you snap out of it a little bit.
"And I think it took him to help me take a step back and look at things from a different perspective. Because obviously, I wasn't playing at my best leading into [the Gold Cup].
"So I was grateful for the opportunity that he gave me. Now I can see, with this journey that I've been on, that being in New England was the right place for me to continue to hone those skills, to create new relationships, to play games, to find my happiness in the sport.
"Then in turn, I can give my best to him and to the national team as well."
The Revs sit 11th in the Eastern Conference and will return to action against D.C. United on Saturday, following the Leagues Cup break.
