What Happened to Michael Carrick? The Numbers Putting His Manchester United Future at Risk
-The manager who guided Manchester United back to the Champions League is now struggling for results. A crushing defeat to Como and comments from Bruno Fernandes have intensified doubts over his future.
Last season, many Manchester United supporters wondered what might have happened if Michael Carrick had started the campaign in charge instead of replacing Rúben Amorim midway through it.
Now, the English manager is facing one of the toughest periods of his coaching career.
A 4-1 Champions League defeat to Como deepened one of the worst starts to a season in the club's history and raised questions about Carrick's future, despite the two-year contract he signed in May.
United have not won since beating Sabah on September 10 and have managed just one victory in their last nine matches, according to the reported figures.
Bruno Fernandes questions Carrick's tactics
The heavy defeat in Italy also prompted uncomfortable comments from the Manchester United captain.
"It was a decision by the coaching staff not to press man-to-man and sometimes to leave space behind so we could win the ball back. But when you give these teams so much possession, you also give them confidence," Bruno Fernandes told TNT Sports.
Asked whether Carrick had made a tactical mistake, Fernandes replied:
"That's for the manager and the coaching staff to answer, not me. Sometimes you have to be braver with your pressing and make them uncomfortable."
Carrick, meanwhile, apologized to supporters.
"I care about this football club as much as anyone, if not more. Playing like that is unacceptable," he said.

The numbers tell a very different story
Last season, Carrick won 12 of his 17 matches in charge, guiding Manchester United back into the UEFA Champions League after a two-year absence.
However, United were competing only in the Premier League at the time, without European fixtures.
His current situation draws comparisons with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who impressed as interim manager following José Mourinho's departure but struggled to maintain that momentum after taking the permanent job.
United host Bournemouth at Old Trafford on Sunday, with Carrick's future still uncertain.
Three warning signs for Carrick at Old Trafford
- A sharp decline in results: United have won just once in their last nine matches, a stark contrast to Carrick's previous spell.
- Questions over his tactics: Bruno Fernandes criticized aspects of the team's approach following the defeat to Como.
- An uncertain future: Despite signing a two-year contract, Carrick faces growing doubts ahead of the Bournemouth match.
