Jamie Carragher believes Trent Alexander-Arnold "made a mistake" going to Real Madrid, and would like to see him back at Liverpool.
Carragher: Alexander-Arnold made mistake by joining Real Madrid
Trent Alexander-Arnold is struggling for game time at Real Madrid, and Jamie Carragher would love to see him back in a Liverpool shirt.
Alexander-Arnold went through the Liverpool academy, making his senior team breakthrough in 2016-17 before ultimately joining Madrid in May 2025.
The right-back made 354 appearances for the Reds in all competitions, winning two Premier League titles, an FA Cup, two EFL Cups, the Champions League, the Super Cup and the Club World Cup.
No defender in Premier League history has provided as many assists in the competition as Alexander-Arnold (64), with ex-team-mate Andy Robertson (62) still remaining behind him.
He has also recorded 82 goal contributions in the Premier League, trailing only Leighton Baines (85) among defenders.
Liverpool fans were not happy when Alexander-Arnold opted to let his contract run down in order to join Madrid, but Carragher thinks a move back to his boyhood club is the right solution.
"I would bring him back," Carragher said of Alexander-Arnold, as quoted by AS.
"He would get a lot of criticism, because I think he made a mistake. I think he made a big mistake going to Madrid. We [Liverpool] have certainly missed his creativity.
"At the moment, he is the third option at right-back [for Madrid]. They are playing a midfielder, [Federico] Valverde, in that position; even in the Clasico, Denzel Dumfries, the starting right-back, came on ahead of him.
"When you are the third option at a club, obviously they want you to leave."
Alexander-Arnold has made seven appearances (four starts) for Madrid in all competitions this term, though he has only tallied 345 minutes. He has one assist to his name.
