Nottingham Forest have confirmed the appointment of Oliver Glasner as their new head coach, with owner Evangelos Marinakis backing the Austrian to get the club competing for major honours.

Forest surprisingly dismissed Vitor Pereira last week despite the former Wolves boss guiding them away from the Premier League danger zone last season.

Pereira was the fourth man to lead Forest during a tumultuous campaign, with Marinakis also sacking Nuno Espirito Santo, Ange Postecoglou and Sean Dyche during the course of 2025-26.

Pereira led Forest to a 16th-place Premier League finish and the semi-finals of the Europa League, where they lost to eventual champions Aston Villa.

But he has been replaced by a manager that led another English club to European glory last term, in former Crystal Palace boss Glasner.

Glasner oversaw the most successful period in Palace's history, as they won the FA Cup, the Community Shield and the Conference League in his two full seasons at the helm, having never won a trophy in the first 119 years of their history.

Glasner's move to the City Ground comes as something of a surprise, given the tensions that developed between Palace and Forest last season, with the Eagles being removed from the Europa League over a breach of multi-club ownership rules after Marinakis lobbied for their ejection.

But Marinakis could not be more pleased to welcome the 51-year-old to the club, saying in a statement: "In our discussions with Oliver, it was clear that we share the same vision, the same ambition and the same relentless desire to succeed. 

"He has consistently demonstrated throughout his career that he can build outstanding teams and deliver success against the strongest competition. 

"It has always been our goal to establish Nottingham Forest once again among the leading clubs in England and Europe. 

"Our ambition is not simply to compete – our ambition is to win, to challenge for major honours and to create a football club that our supporters can be proud of for many years to come. 

"Oliver is a winner. He has earned success through his leadership, his personality and the style of football his teams play. We believe he is the right person to lead us into this next chapter, and I am delighted to welcome Oliver to the club."

Under Glasner, Palace became only the third English team to win a trophy in their first season in major European competition, after West Ham in the 1964-65 Cup Winners Cup and Newcastle United in the 1968-69 Fairs Cup.

Their domestic form suffered as a result of their European exploits in 2025-26, though.

Palace's 15th-placed finish in the Premier League was the second lowest by any team that won a major European trophy in the same season, after Tottenham in 2024-25 (17th, won the Europa League).

Glasner's Forest side will not be in Europe in 2026-27, though Palace will play in the Europa League under his successor Pierre Sage. Glasner previously won Europe's second-tier competition with Eintracht Frankfurt in 2021-22.

Glasner's first Premier League game in charge of Forest will be at home to Leeds United on August 22, while he will face a return to Selhurst Park against Palace in early October.
