Manchester City Just Signed Him, but Enzo Fernández Hasn’t Forgotten His Roots and Plans to Return to River Plate
Enzo Fernández has just completed one of the most expensive transfers of the recent market, but his comments about the future have already sparked hopes of a possible return to River Plate.
The transfer market turned Enzo Fernández into one of the summer's biggest talking points. His move to Manchester City from Chelsea was reportedly worth around $165 million, a figure that reflects the importance of the Argentine midfielder in European soccer.
However, as he begins a new chapter in England, the World Cup winner has once again spoken about his roots. During an interview with Argentine journalist Gastón Edul, the midfielder made comments that quickly caught the attention of River Plate fans and sparked conversations about what could happen at the end of his European career.
"I'm Going to Return": Enzo Fernández Confirms His Desire to Rejoin River
The 25-year-old midfielder had no hesitation when asked about a potential return to the Argentine club. "I want to return to River at some point, I've said it several times. I'm going to return, I'm sure. It's something I really want," Fernández said during his conversation with Edul.
He also explained that his intention is to return to win titles and enjoy the River Plate atmosphere once again. Although he acknowledged that he still has a long way to go in England, he made it clear that he stands by his words and that returning to the club he loves remains one of his personal goals.
From River Plate to Manchester City: A Million-Dollar Career
Fernández's career began to gain momentum at River Plate, where he made 53 appearances, scored 12 goals, and provided 10 assists between 2020 and 2022. He then made the move to Benfica, where he won the Portuguese league title.
His performances at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, where he was named the Best Young Player, accelerated his move to Chelsea in a deal worth approximately $141 million. During his time with the Blues, he made 170 appearances, scored 31 goals, and registered 30 assists, while also winning the FIFA Club World Cup and the Conference League.

Manchester City Will Have to Wait: River Remains in His Plans
Fernández now faces a new challenge with Manchester City, who paid around $165 million to sign him from Chelsea. The Argentine has already made several appearances and scored his first goal for the team with a spectacular free kick in a 5-3 victory over Sunderland.
His contract with the English club runs until 2031, so there are no indications that a return to Argentina will happen anytime soon. The player himself acknowledged that he still has plenty to accomplish in Manchester, but his comments left River Plate fans with one certainty: the Argentine club still holds a special place in his plans for the future.
